In 1972, British soldiers shot and killed 13 people in Derry, Northern Ireland. The band U2 dedicated their later worldwide hit „Sunday Bloody Sunday“ to this event. However, this „Irish Bloody Sunday“ had a predecessor on November 21, 1920, when security forces of the British occupying forces shot and killed 14 civilians in Dublin.
During the civil war (1968–1998), approximately 16,200 bombings, 37,000 incidents of firearms use, 22,000 armed robberies and 2,200 arson attacks were recorded.

Peace
The peace process was initiated with the rapprochement between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland in the 1980s.
The Good Friday Agreement, consisting of an intergovernmental British-Irish treaty and an agreement between unionist and nationalist parties, achieved broad social approval in the north and south of the island of Ireland.
